Cinematographer working mainly in feature films and short fiction, with frequent forays into commercials and documentary.

I gravitate towards intimate, character-driven stories. Even when the world around them is large —whether the film is choral or historical in scale—, what I look for with the camera is the inner register of a character.

I start from the script and build outward, searching for the visual idea that holds the story together before thinking about lenses or fixtures. From there we build a language that expresses the story and is allowed to evolve with it. I’m drawn to motivated light, contrast and atmosphere as narrative material. Most of my work lives in a kind of heightened naturalism: grounded in the real, but free to push further when the story asks for it.

Filmmaking is collaborative work, and I believe in long creative relationships, where a shared language deepens project after project. The films I’m proudest of come from that kind of trust.
